Technology for Wishing
Simon Warwick Green is an artist and writer whose work explores the creation of otherworldly spaces. His paintings often begin as sketchbook drawings—fragments born from unconscious mark-making in charcoal and mixed media. These initial images, rich with narrative and textual potential, serve as catalysts for painting.
However, through the painting process, he deliberately disrupts his own intentions, allowing for slippage and unexpected transformations to take place. At times, a childlike quality runs through the work—whimsical, yet teetering on the edge of the uncanny. Recurring motifs emerge: elongated, snake-like fingers, bandaged figures, and the blurring of internal body structures with landscapes.
Surrendering to the process, he lets the paintings take on a life of their own—working quickly across multiple canvases, pressing wet paintings together before peeling them apart, and pouring water over thick layers of acrylic, inviting chance to play an active role.
