Under Tale

Undertale is a duo show bringing together new work by artists Paula Garcia Sans and Violeta Paez Armando. A combination of works in progress and things they’ve been thinking about this year, Undertale is an exploration of expanded sculptural practices in conversation with other mediums. Born out of a joint aesthetic sensibility and conversations, this show acts like a playtest for the way their practices intersect, mixing sculpture, writing and a videogame.

Violeta works across sculpture and writing. Using elements such as resin, wax, metal and found industrial objects, their practice is, at its core, a form of material world-building. This body of work draws on the Hellmouth, an early medieval Christian iconography, read within the ecosystem of their work as a proto-horror trope, deeply linked with ideas of sensuality and devouring.

Paula has been working on a series of stone sculptures and a videogame, inspired by the appearance and disappearance of architecture in relation to changing environmental conditions. Both emerge from 3D scans of a catalan village submerged in the 60s for the construction of a water reservoir, and recently revealed by drought. The works consider haunting and the material traces left by places that periodically return.
